ABOUT:
JO UNDERHILL - Photographer
Jo Underhill is a freelance photographer based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire and works all over the UK. Her background is in architectural photography but since 2019 she has been working with art galleries, curators and artists to photograph their exhibitions and public art installations. She enjoys exploring and documenting art installations and exhibitions. Her photography focuses on the art and its relationship with the space it is exhibited, the dialogue between the curated artwork and how people interact and view the art.
She has worked with a number of clients including Kettle's Yard, Serpentine Gallery, The Heong Gallery, The Women's Art Collection, Hayward Gallery, If_Do Architects and Jamie Fobert Architects. Jo has had her images featured in a number of publications, books and exhibition catalogues including Ai Weiwei: The Liberty of Doubt exhibition catalogue (Kettle’s Yard), Gavin Turk: In Search of Ariadne exhibition catalogue (Heong Gallery) and Barbara Chase Riboud Infinite Folds book (Serpentine Gallery).
Jo has a passion for concrete and brutalist architecture which has led her over the last 12 years to work on an ongoing personal project photographing brutalist buildings across the UK. In 2021 Jo self-published her project Ode to Welbeck as a limited edition photography book designed by Stanley James Press. It brought together photographs she had taken from regular visits to the iconic Welbeck Street Car Park in London to document the car park's last few years before its demolition. In 2022 Jo self-published Beautiful Brutalism, her sold out second limited edition photography book, again designed by Stanley James Press, which looked back at some of the buildings she had photographed in the first ten years of the project.
